Victor Cudjoe over the weekend won the first Granfondo Ghana Cycling race. The 100km attached cyclists from Nigeria, Togo and other African countries with 1,192meters of hill climbs across Adenta, Dodowa, Agomeda, Somamya, Apireda, Adukrom, Akropong, Mamfe Aburi and ending back at Adenta.

The first half of the race on Sunday was fraught with aggressive riding in the peloton with one attack after another, and riders eager to form a breakaway from the peloton but every move was tracked down and blocked almost immediately. The breakaway eventually formed on the Apirede climb but the peloton stayed together as they hit the lower slopes of the second category climb.

100 cyclists from Ghana and other West African countries will compete this Sunday in the maiden edition of the cycling calendar’s highly anticipated race featuring Ghana’s most beautiful and incredibly hard medium mountain climb, Apirede, as part of the 100km route.

Apirede is a second-category climb covering 8km with the steepest section touching 20% gradient. The climb starts at 50km immediately after the riders turn off the main Somanya road to crossover to the Akuapim ridge.

The race will start from Adenta with the first 20km on an undulating road. There will be a lot of tension from the start as riders fight to get into the break to get a head start. Here riders would have to be careful with early breakaway and if a break forms there is a good chance for the escapees to open up a significant gap on the peloton.

Ghana will host its first international cycling race of the year on Sunday, August 22, 2021, when the Granfondo Ghana Cycling Race is held across the Greater Accra and Eastern regions.
